January Newsletter!

Mrs. Johnson's Class
Room 203

The students had a nice transition back to school after the holiday break.  I want to thank everyone again for their generous gifts and notes.  It is greatly appreciated.

It's January and we have started to work on our new unit called, "We Need Change". In this unit we explore how conflict can lead to war, the consequences of war, and how compromises can end a conflict in a positive way. Students will learn different problem solving skills, along with compromising to address conflict situations. Students will also learn how to stand up for themselves instead of responding with anger or not standing up for themselves at all.

Quiet Corner

We have a new addition to our classroom that the children have been enjoying.  When work is complete or during bell time the children have the opportunity to utilize the quiet corner.

Making Butter
Students learned in social studies that long ago people had to grow and cook their own food differently.  Students investigate what happens when whipping cream is shaken.

Enjoying the Fruits of Our Labor

Mrs. J brought in some gluten free crackers to try the butter on.The butter was extremely good!

Hard at Work

It has been much more difficult to take pictures lately as we are very hard at work becoming more independent each day.  The kids are really working hard to meet all of their goals.

Reading
The students have been working in three different types of reading groups.  One is an independent group where they practice the skills taught throughout the day.  This group is guided by the classroom aides.  The next group is a guided reading group and is led by Mrs. Johnson.  Students come back and read with Mrs. Johnson working on specific tasks and goals.  We also work on comprehension and vocabulary. Lastly, we have whole group instruction.  Students practice having discussions about certain topics, comprehension skills, phonics and vocabulary.

Snowflakes

Students follow multi-step directions when making snowflakes.

Small Jobs
The students perform small tasks each day around the classroom.  Matthew especially likes when we are doing jobs.
