Mrs. Johnson's Class Room 203 Newsletter

Mrs. Johnson's Class

There's been a lot going on since the last newsletter.  We started a new unit on Light and Sound.  The lessons focus on exploring how light and sound waves interact with various materials.

In math, we continue to work at adding and subtracting but are working on digits in the hundreds and thousands.  Students continue to work on coin values, adding coins of the same and different values and making change.

There have been a lot of changes in our schedule due to the NYS ELA assessments going on in the building.  The students have all successfully dealt with the changes in schedule.

We have been in the kitchen making some fun treats.  Pancakes, pizza and icebox cake!
The students absolutely LOVED the cake.

Thank you to those who have been generous enough to send in some extra supplies to hold us to the end of the school year.

I would like to announce that our next ALL STAR will be
KIERSTEN SETRAN!

Enjoy the pictures!

Meditation
The student have been practicing meditation each day.  We started off with three minutes and have made it to 9 minutes. Meditation has many benefits such as improved focus/concentration, self-regulation,increased positive behavior, reduces stress, increases self-awareness and overall health.

Pancakes
Students followed the recipe step-by-step.

 Spelling Bee
Students have been coming up to the board to perform in our classroom spelling bee.  They enjoy rooting their teammates on and hearing the cheers!

Coin Recognition
I have come up with some stories to help with coin recognition and their value.  The stories are told in a certain rhythm to help with memorizing.  This will help those that struggle remember their coins and their values.

Sequencing

We have been working on sequencing events.  The sequencing cards go from easy to difficult. The students enjoy manipulating the cards on the board and are amused by the load buzzer when you get it wrong!   We try not to hear it too often!

Old Friends and New Friends

Cooperative Learning Groups
To foster communication students are now working in pairs for some of their math group activities.  It is awesome to see the students interacting, having fun and LEARNING!

Morning Meetings
Morning Meetings are going strong. We have added a small journal writing that we share. We write about 3 times per week if time permits.  The students write for three minutes with relaxation music playing in the background.  When the three minutes are up the students come to morning meeting and share what they have written.

Icebox Cake
Icebox Cake was a family favorite when I was growing up. My mom would make it for us as an after-school treat.  My mom loved making it for my kids but most of all loved watching them eat it. This was just as much fun for me because the students absolutely loved the cake!  A bonus is it is so easy to make!
All you need is :
Instant pudding
Graham Crackers
Milk
